Infant Stimulation: Early Education

Sixtine and I have been doing Maths this week. I know. She is four months old. But it is never too early to learn. My little girl loves looking at new things, and interacting with me and a few flashcards. The excitement she gets from it is priceless – she will move her arms and legs, and smile like she is having the time of her life.

I showed her numbers from 1 to 20, and she looked at each little dots or mini flowers with great interest, noticing, or I like to think so, the difference between each card. We also counted mummy’s fingers, and sang a French song called 1, 2, 3, nous irons aux bois which teaches children how to count up to twelve.

I also changed the scenery around her changing table – I printed and laminated 5 paintings from well-known artist such as Renoir, and Leonardo Da Vinci (Sunflowers, Mona Lisa…) and she noticed the difference right away ! She seems to enjoy Mona Lisa more than any of the other paintings but babies love human faces so nothing surprising here.

I recently moved her mat in front of a mirror so she can look at herself and be aware of her movements. She absolutely loves it. I added a few birds, and butterflies pictures and she seems to enjoy them as well. It seems to help a lot with tummy time (she’s not a big fan but enjoys it more when she can see herself in the mirror.) It is too funny to see her lift her bum up and push on her leg to move around. I find it much easier for her to do so when she is wearing very few clothes on. I need to get her leg warmers…any suggestions? It is kinda cold here in Atlantic Canada.

She has lots of fun seeing the world from the top of that big stability/exercise ball I got for her. I borrowed a similar one at the end of my pregnancy thinking it would induce labor. I don’t know if it was a coincidence but my water broke at 2.30am that night ! Ahh…memories !

We also did a lot of singing and dancing this week. We sang in French, English and even Spanish (although I don’t speak this language).

Between Doman, Montessori, and other methods of learning I am interested in, we definitely have things to entertain ourselves with. I love to see how thirsty for knowledge she is – she learns so fast ! I can’t believe how great she’s getting at coordinating her movements to take her bottle or soother out or in of her mouth !

I am looking to buy a few toys for the baby and all I want to say is: Long live Etsy for great handmade toys, ideas and resource ! If you check out my Pinterest profile (I just started it) you will see my long list of wants for the baby ! Although I know everyday items work just as fine – I have been wanting to get her a Gobbi mobile, a baby rattle, a teether and a couple wooden toys (other than her hairbrush !).

Any other suggestions?

When the Baby First Says Mama

I have been reading “How Smart Is Your Baby?, Develop and nurture your newborn’s full potential” by Glenn and Janet Doman and I wanted to share some of it with you. Right now, I am reading The Language Development Program from Birth to 12 Months chapter.

“Listening is key” ; “All sounds are language”; “When the baby knows you are listening, he will communicate as often possible.”; “It is vital for your baby to know that you know he is talking.”

Part V – Assigning Meaning To A Specific Sound

“Now consider the first word of a baby born in the United States. It is almost certain to be “Mama.” As it happens this is very easy specific sound to make. When a little American baby says “Mama.” for the first time  mother comes rushing over to him and smothers hm with kisses, “Yes, I am Mama!” she tells the baby. Every time the baby repeats the sound “Mama” the same thing happens. That night she proudly tells father, “The baby called me Mama today!”

“The truth is when the baby first says mama we do not have the ghost of an idea what the baby means. He may mean ‘mother’, he may mean ‘blanket’, or he may mean ‘food’.

Who knows?

Let’s assume this particular baby meant “blanket” but every time he says “Mama” he gets mother, not the blanket. At some point he says to himself, “Well, I am not getting my blanket with this but since I always seem to get mother I guess I’ll use this sound when I want mother and find some other way to say blanket.

If we ask a French mother, “What is the first word a baby says in France?”, she will say, “Why, Mama, of course!”

And when we ask “but what does that mean?” she will say, “It means me! It means mother.”

Again when we have no idea what the little French baby means when he first says “Mama” but our French mother also assumes he is talking about her and the baby quickly learns the effect that “Mama” has upon his mother.

If we go to Japan (feeling very confident now) we say to a Japanese mother, “Is Mama the first word that Japanese babies say?”

When she confirms that it is, we say, “And it means mother?”

She will stop us in our tracks and say, “No, Mama means food.”

Now we can propose that when a Japanese baby says “Mama” for the first time we don’t have a ghost of an idea what he means. He may mean “mother’, he may mean “blanket”, he may mean “food”. But every time the Japanese baby repeats the sound “Mama” he either gets a bottle to drink from or a breast to nurse from or a spoon full of food. He learns very quickly not to say “Mama” unless he is hungry.

In assuming that her baby wants food, the Japanese mother shows that she is a bit less egocentric than the rest of us. She is also probably closer to the truth.


The baby is looking at what works with mother and what does not work.

When he sees that she responds consistently, he will repeat the successful action.When the sound he makes does not produce a result, he abandons it.

If he makes sound and no one listens to him or responds to him, he will stop making sounds or will make them infrequently.”

I found this part of the book very interesting. I have noticed that my daughter always stares at my mouth when I am talking, moving her lips as she is trying to repeat after me. She is right now more interested in discovering parts of her body, playing with her hands and feet but she does enjoy having long conversation with me as well !

When did your baby say “Mama” for the first time and what was his/her first word? Bilingual families, which language came first?

Montessori : Intriguing, Exciting, Overwhelming

I want the best for my child. But doesn’t anyone?

When I was pregnant, I liked to picture my baby-in-the-making running towards me at the end of a fun day at school. And it got me thinking. What do I want for her? Is there any alternative to the regular curriculum? I am not sure why I was interested in something potentially different for her but I was/am.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I would like to provide her with as much opportunities as possible to speak French and go to a French daycare if at all possible.But what else?

I am currently ready “How Smart is Your Baby?” by Doman which is a very interesting book. Some of the activities suggested for babies aren’t always realistic but I enjoy knowing more about ways of developing my baby girl’s potential. We have been using flashcards and she seems to be very interested in them.

On the other hand, I have started to look into Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy of education and I am intrigued, excited and overwhelmed.

There are three English Montessori schools here (with French initiation) on the island but they only offer education from 16 months and up.

Until then, what can I do for her? Is there some kind of “curriculum” for young infants?

I am not sure where to start. when to start. if I should start at all.

I would love some feedback from parents sending their children to Montessori schools or homeschooling the Montessori way. And for those who are against or not interested in this philosophy of education, please share why ! Thank you !
